Too Important To Be Forgotten

This is Memorial Day weekend.  In cities and towns across the United States people will take a break from their usual routine and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have given their lives in the service of their country.  There will be parades and memorial services and we will all be reminded that freedom and liberty have not come without great cost.  Hopefully, we will be inspired by the example of our heroes, sons and daughters of Americans, to remember and understand that we have a shared responsibility and duty to live out the ideals and beliefs we share as Americans.

Chiseled outside the cemetery on Iwo Jima is this inscription:

“When you go home
Tell them for us and say
For your tomorrow
We gave our today.”

There are 6800 graves of American servicemen on the island of Iwo Jima.  Memorial Day serves as a reminder that some have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and liberty.  Wherever you find yourself this Memorial Day, I hope you will pause to remember and give thanks for those who have served.  Friends, there are some things that are too important to be forgotten.

This is the point of Joshua 4.  After the people had crossed the Jordan River, God told Joshua to choose one man from each of the twelve tribes to carry a stone from where the people had crossed in order to set up a memorial in their camp.  The stones would serve as a reminder that God had done something incredible in their midst.  The people would be reminded of their shared heritage of faith and their shared responsibility and duty to live according to the commands of God.  Why?  Some things are too important to be forgotten.

Romans 8:32 reads, “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all – how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things.”

God has set apart the weekly observance of the Sabbath so that we might remember all that He has done and so we would remember our shared responsibility to live according to the commands of God.  As your summer heats up and becomes filled with activity, remember the importance of remembering the Sabbath observance and keeping it holy.

Then the peoples of the earth will know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and we will always fear the Lord our God (Joshua 4:24).  Our salvation cost God the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Some things are too important to be forgotten.
